Professional Bio
Carmel Mesiti has been involved in Education for over 20 years. In 2017 she was awarded the MGSE Research Leadership Excellence Award in recognition of outstanding contribution to a program of internationally significant research. She has been teaching in the mathematics primary, secondary and masters education programs at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, and has been working as a research fellow at the International Centre for Classroom Research, the University of Melbourne.
Carmel’s research interests have included mathematical tasks, lesson structure, lesson beginnings, research agendas of policy makers and teachers, coherence in the mathematics classroom, and more recently, the nature of differences in the pedagogical lexicons of education communities internationally. Carmel began her career in government schools as a secondary school mathematics teacher teaching Mathematics across Years 7 to 12 and held significant leadership positions including Head of the Mathematics Faculty.
